What is Mikie Squared and who is Mikie? We have nothing to do with Mile Square, nor our we “Mickey’s.” These are the two biggest misconceptions. Mikie Squared is named after the owner, Mike Fasciano and his son, Mikie. Despite the fact that he is only 4 years old, little Michael is the future heir of Mikie Squared and is quite the regular. He is often spotted after long days at pre-school watching Tom & Jerry and munching on fresh avocado, ham and the famous fresh cut french fries. His drink of choice is a glass of soymilk while the senior Fasciano prefers a Hoegaarden Belgian beer. The father-son duo share a similar passion for the Yankees, Devils, Nets, and of course, Tiger Woods and Fred Couples.
So there’s a little Michael, cute, entertaining and quick with a smile, but who’s the big guy? Mike was born in his parent’s home in Molfetta, Italy. For ten years he worked with his family farming vegetables and making wine with his grandfather. “I spent the early years of my childhood trying to make wine and my adult life drinking it. Drinking it is much easier.” Mike came to Hoboken at the age of 10, on a plane, not a boat. “More on than off,” he laughs. “We were able to live in a railroad apartment. People think that’s cool. But it’s not really that cool.” He is a product of Hoboken high where he played football and attempted to stay out of trouble. “Trouble wasn’t always unavoidable!”
After a few years of working with Haagen-Dazs, he wanted to break out and find financial security elsewhere. With little funds but a huge dream and a taste for Italian cuisine and the Hoboken restaurant scene, Mike and his family opened the doors to Margherita’s Pizza and Cafe. Margherita’s has been serving homemade pasta and phenomenal pies since 1993. Today, Margherita’s is one of Hoboken’s best Italian restaurants and prides itself on their homemade pasta, homemade mozzarella, fresh pizza and Italian family hospitality.
However, this local favorite was not enough for Mike. It would be a bit odd to serve burgers and sandwiches at Margherita’s, so, when the opportunity to purchase a bar in his old neighborhood presented itself, Mike and his wife were quick to respond. “I wanted a bar for the love of hamburgers and steak. I love fresh burgers and fresh beer.” And, by the way, his burgers are “the juiciest in town.” Just like the handmade pasta at Margherita’s, Mikie Squared serves only the freshest of meat, handmade and NEVER frozen. Mikies is not your typical bar and grill. The bar offers an extensive wine list with a great variety of American and International varieties. From our kitchen our guests can order anything from the hand-formed burgers to pork chops and prime rib. The bar is a place to have fun, serve great food and offer a wide variety of tap and bottled beers. “I wanted a place where I could get away and watch the Yankees or watch some golf while enjoying an ice-cold beer.” If you don’t know him now, stop by Mikie Squared and introduce yourself to Mike.
